Nashville protesters disperse after blocking I-24 in Ferguson vigil
About 450 people marched through downtown Nashville in ‘solidarity’ with Ferguson, Mo., blocking streets and drawing befuddled looks from tourists under the neon lights of Broadway.
November 24, 2014 – Candlelight Vigil and March in Nashville
Notably, the protest remained peaceful—unlike events in other cities—without vandalism or violence. In fact, Chief Anderson even noted that some participants helped pick up trash after the event.
Following the grand jury’s decision on November 23, 2014, not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, a candlelight vigil was held in downtown Nashville on November 24 in front of the Metro Criminal Justice Center. MTSU Sidelines
After the vigil, demonstrators marched from the Justice Center along James E. Robertson Parkway to Shelby Street and eventually onto Interstate 24 (I-24). They lay down in the roadway, effectively halting traffic. MTSU SidelinesThe Washington Post
In a distinct approach, Nashville police, under Chief Steve Anderson, chose not to confront protesters with force. Instead, they offered hot chocolate, coffee, and bottled water, and managed the situation much like a civic parade—communicating with protest leaders, marching alongside them, and maintaining order without arrests. The Washington Post
After approximately 20–25 minutes, police cleared the protesters off I-24, reopening the roadway. The intent was to allow the demonstration to make a statement while minimizing disruption and avoiding violence. The Washington Post
